FAQ

What does local recording mean?

Your audio and video are recorded right on your own device instead of being streamed to a server that records them there. That's why the recording doesn't depend on your internet connection. If your line gets shaky, the others might hear you a bit worse live, but it doesn't change anything in the file. While you talk, podsink uploads the recording in small pieces in the background.

Do I need an account?

Only if you're the host. Your guests just open the link, enter a name and they're in, with no login and no sign-up. As the host, you sign in with a magic link or a passkey, and there's no password.

How does a session work?

You create a session whenever it suits you and send your guests the invite link from the menu, or you give it a date and send the invitation from your own calendar. Once everyone's there, you start recording, and you can stop and record again in the same session as often as you like. Please only end the session once everyone's upload is through. After that, you download the ZIP.

How many people can join?

A session holds up to 8 people, with or without video, or as many as agreed on Business. To keep the call stable, podsink lowers the live picture's resolution as the room fills up. The recording still happens at full resolution on every device.

Which browser should I use?

We recommend Chrome or Edge on a computer. Other Chromium-based browsers usually work too, but we don't officially support them. We'd love to support every browser, but Safari and Firefox can't reach the quality we need for the recording yet.

Does it work on phones and tablets?

We can't record on iPhones or iPads yet, because every browser there runs on WebKit, which lacks what the recording needs. Android with Chrome can work, but it's untested and unsupported. If you try it anyway, wired headphones with a microphone matter. For a relaxed recording, though, a computer is the right choice.

What quality does podsink record in?

The audio is an uncompressed WAV at 48 kHz, 16-bit, mono, one file per participant, on every plan. That's your master, and the small file for the feed comes at the very end. Video goes into a separate MP4 per participant. The host picks the resolution for the session, from 720p up to 4K, and video is part of the Free, Max and Business plans.

What if something goes wrong?

A crashed browser or a closed tab isn't the end of a recording. Whoever opens the link again is back in, and as long as the session hasn't ended, the upload picks up right where it stopped. The recording then continues on a new track so nothing overlaps.

Can I leave while the recording is running?

As a guest, yes, with Leave in the control bar. Your own recording stops there, and the next page uploads the rest. Once the green check shows up, you can close the tab. As the host you don't have a Leave button, because when you stop, the take ends for everyone.

Will the files work in my editing software?

Yes. Every track is a 48 kHz WAV, plus an MP4 when the session records video, and the WAVs are aligned so they line up right on import. The project files put the videos in the right place. The ZIP also has project files for Reaper, Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro with tracks and markers already in place. Only DaVinci Resolve needs two extra steps.

How long are recordings available?

On the Free plan they stay for 3 days after the session ends, on Pro and Max for 7 days, and then they're deleted for good. Two days before deletion you also get a reminder mail if you haven't downloaded yet.
